Title: Towards Virtual Sensors: Using Data Science to model the Photosynthetically Available Radiation in the Water Column
Host: Profa. Mariza Ferro (IC/UFF)
Speaker: Frederic Stahl (DFKI/GER)
Resumo: The presentation will start with an overview of the structure and research conducted at the Marine Perception Research Department at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. Next, the topic of predicting photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) in the water column will be explored in greater detail. PAR is essential for understanding primary oxygen production and ecosystem dynamics in marine environments. This study investigates the application and optimisation of machine learning approaches for PAR prediction in the water column using selected wavelengths of downwelling irradiance derived from BGC-Argo float and ship-based expedition data. All models were validated against independent datasets from diverse oceanic regions, to explore generalisability of the models across different geo-locations. The comparative analysis demonstrates that the machine learning approaches can model PAR with a very high accuracy. Overall, the findings underline the robustness of machine learning techniques for enhancing bio-optical sensor configurations, therefore reducing the need for dedicated physical PAR sensors in autonomous ocean observing systems. Next, the talk links to the works conducted in cooperation with Prof. Mariza Ferro at UFF on how PAR prediction can benefit from accurate estimations of energy requirements of machine learning models on edge devices.
Short Bio: Frederic Stahl has been Head of the Marine Perception Research Department at the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) since 2023 and Head of the AI Competence Centre for Environment and Sustainability (DFKI4Planet) also since 2023. He joined DFKI as a Principal Researcher in 2019. From 2012 to 2019, he served as a Lecturer and Associate Professor in Data Science at the University of Reading, UK. In 2012, he worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Design Engineering and Computing at Bournemouth University, UK. Prior to that, from 2010 to 2012, he was a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Portsmouth, UK. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Portsmouth in 2010, following his Dipl.-Ing. (FH) degree in Bioinformatics from the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf, Germany, in 2006. He has been working in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence for twenty years and has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed conferences, journals, and book chapters. Dr. Stahl is a member of the British Computer Society (BCS) and has been elected for four consecutive as a committee member of the BCS Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence (SGAI), serving on the committee since 2013. In this role, he is involved in the organisation of the annual SGAI International Conference on Artificial Intelligence. In addition, he joined the editorial board of the Springer journal Künstliche Intelligenz in 2025.
